...got a spare 500,000 euros? This is quite an object from history up for auction. Not that I can ever imagine having 500,000 euros hanging around spare, but if I did that would probably be the kind of thing I would blow it on...wonder if it actually still works....

I'd wager it still works. Weren't those pinhole / buttonhole cameras?

There is only one left in the world apparently (according to the knowledge of camerapedia at least) http://www.camerapedia.org/wiki/Le_Daguerreotype and if it sells again will probably have cost various buyers over a million euros down the years. If I was paying that much I think I would want to be able to take a picture with it!
