It is a year in which Wes Anderson released a film, so chances are said movie is going to make the list of my favorite things of the year.
Isle of Dogs did not buck that trend. It's possibly the most Wes Anderson Wes Anderson has ever been. The stop motion / animation format simply provides even more control to the auteur who excels in the staged.
All your favorite Wes Anderson actors are in there, well, their voices are at least. As always with Anderson all the artifice cloaks another slightly surreal tale, but one that is once again grounded in an exploration of relationships. It's still what Anderson actually does best.
Behind all the stage and film craft is another set of eccentric but interesting characters, with another journey to navigate (in this case a literal one). It's so lovingly crafted, but that's exactly what we've come to expect from a Wes Anderson film.
So I was probably predisposed to love this film. It's no surprise that I did.
