When photographer Chris gets invited to meet his Girlfriend Rose's family, he expects it will just be the regular racism of everyday society that he encounters in the affluent white community. What lies beneath goes deeper of course. The film goes places you don't expect in all the best ways. This could have been leaden or heavy handed in the wrong hands, but Peele handles directorial responsibilities with aplomb. It has a light touch where needed, and his comedic sensibilities are put to good use without ever going to far.
It is unnervingly brilliant.
There is a brilliant restraint to the whole thing, as the director is happy to let the characters tell the story, and the performances oblige. Peele also manages to avoid the potential for obvious moralizing. The message is all the more effective for it.
An unexpectedly fantastic film.
