My Favorite things in 2014 - Day 8

This one is another throwback, a remaster of sorts of one of my favorite old games. The original Abe's Oddysee was one of the most character filled and fun titles on the original Playstation back in 1997.

It spawned a whole series of Oddworld games, but it was always that first game that held a place in my gamers heart. Thus it was with a lot of excitement, and a little bit of dread, that I approached the new reboot of the series for the Playstation 4 - Oddworld - New 'n' Tasty

The game is still an old school platformer, which was part platform action, part Lemmings (and that ages it of course, given quoting Lemmings as an inspiration will have many modern gamers looking up why I'm referencing rodents). As well as moving from section to section you have to lead your fellow creatures out of danger in each section. This is done by giving them some rudimentary instructions like 'follow me' and 'stay here'. It was more of a logic platformer than a reflex one, although many of the levels required some pretty dexterous routines to complete.

Thankfully the reboot manages to capture all the charm of the original. Abe was just a great character, and he still is. You immediately feel for him, and his quest to prevent his evil overlords from eating him and his friends.

They have done a great job updating the game with a modern aesthetic, while retaining most of the old game-play. It immediately feels like the game I remember from all those years ago, and at the same time, looks like a modern title.

They also don't make platform games like this as much anymore, and the nostalgia value of playing through was strong.

If you played the original, don't be scared, pick this one up and you can enjoy it all over again. If you haven't, don't be put off. It's a cool little game, set in a great world, with endearing characters. Abe needs your help!
